About Manuscripts

The first books produced in roll or codex form appeared in Asia. Manuscripts, handwritten copies on papyrus, parchment, paper, etc., paved the way for the book to be held dear not only as a means of transmitting the culture, but also as an aesthetic commodity.Islamic-Turkish culture also experienced a process in which intensive writing was produced thanks to the compilation of hadiths and the spread of religious sciences, along with the reproduction of the Qur'an by turning it into a book. The Ottoman Turks, who were added to this culture and civilization, were also producing books, which was an obligation for the madrasa studies, which they started with the formation of the state, with manuscripts. The existence of approximately 400,000 manuscripts registered only in Turkey reveals that there was intense book production before the printing press.
