Magazines are published periodically to cover various topics and are generally financed by subscription system. The first magazine, like the first newspaper, was a philosophy piece that appeared in Germany in the second half of the 17th century. Then, The Gentlemen's Magazine for the general public appeared in England in the 18th century and continued for 200 years.
In the Ottomans, magazines began to appear in the second half of the 19th century. This first publication, which belonged to a particular discipline rather than addressing to the general audience, was Mecmua-i Tıbbiye (1849). Later, Mecmua-i Fünun, which was also a science journal, began to be published. At the end of the century, Servet-i Fünun and Sırat-ı Müstakim (Sebilürreşad) that were published by the arduous efforts of Ahmed İhsan and Eşref Edib followed by Ebuzziya and Ahmed Midhat Effendi’s great strives.
